If you’re planning a trip abroad, you’ve no doubt noticed how weak the Aussie dollar is compared to many other major currencies at the moment.
Right now, it’s not a great time to be an Aussie in the UK ($1 AUD = 0.52 GBP), the United States ($1 AUD = 0.65 USD) or Europe ($1 AUD = 0.61 EUR).
But there are still places where Aussies can stretch their money further.
Fiji
$1 = $1.47 FJD
Keen for a tropical getaway? If you head to Nadi, a local beer at a restaurant would cost you $6.50 FJD or $4.40, according to the Wise research supplied to Yahoo Finance. A three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant for two would set you back $60 FJD or $40, while a cheap meal costs about $9 FJD or $6.14.
Sri Lanka
$1 AUD = 204.80 Sri Lankan rupees
Sri Lanka is another cheap and popular destination for Aussies. In Kandy, a local beer would cost you around 500Rs or $2.45, an inexpensive restaurant meal would also cost you 500Rs or $2.45, while a monthly public transport pass to explore the country is just 2,125Rs or just over $10.

Over in Hanoi, the nation’s capital, you can grab a meal at a street vendor for just 50,000₫or $3.13. If you want to try a famous Vietnamese coffee, this would set you back 45,909₫ or $2.88, while half a litre of beer would cost 20,575₫ or $1.29.
Japan
$1 AUD = 96.65 Japanese yen
In Kyoto, a bottle of local beer would cost 252¥ or just under $3. A three-course meal for two at a relatively nice restaurant would cost you about 5,000¥ or $52, while a monthly public transport pass to check out all the sites would cost 9,260¥ or $95.
South Africa
$1 AUD = 12.31 South African rand
In Cape Town, which is well-known for its wine, a bottle of mid-range red would cost you 85R or $6.90. Meanwhile, a three-course meal for two at a nice restaurant would set you back 700R or $56.
Thailand
$1 AUD = 1,200 Thai Baht
Heading back to tropical locations, in Phuket, you can get half a litre of domestic beer for 56.82฿ or just $2.45. This is an absolute steal when you consider some places in Australia are now charging $18 for a pint. A nice three-course meal for two would set you back 1,200฿ or around $50.
India
$1 AUD = 54.27 Indian rupees
If you head to India’s largest city, Mumbai, a coffee would cost 219₹ or $4, while a meal from a street vendor would cost you around 300₹ or $5.50. And there are even cheaper destinations in India than Mumbai if you want to stretch your dollar further.
Argentina
$1 AUD = 542.04 Argentine pesos
It can be tricky to buy Argentine pesos due to supply but USD is widely accepted by most businesses. Even if you are using USD, it can still be relatively cheap for Aussies. In Buenos Aires, a coffee costs around $1.57 USD or $2.40, while a bottle of medium-range red wine costs $3.35 USD or $5.13.
