Corfu travel tips
How to get around
Corfu is a large island, and like other Greek island destinations such as Crete, the best way to get around is by car. Renting a car will allow you to explore all the off-the-beaten paths and reach the gorgeous beaches around Corfu.
You will need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car on the island, and the driver needs to be 21 years old or older. A great alternative is to rent a scooter, which will be easier to park.
However, if you don’t plan to get around as much during your holiday, you could easily take local buses or a taxi.
Getting around with the bus is super cheap, with rides costing only a few euros. Just keep in mind that service is reduced on weekends and during the low season.
Two bus companies operate on the island, the Corfu City Bus, which covers shorter distances, and the Green Buses, which travel further around the island. You can purchase tickets from automatic ticket vending machines, the station master’s offices, and local kiosks. The Corfu City Bus also offers a day pass for only 5€, allowing unlimited rides for that day.
For taxis, the only thing to consider is that their prices add up fast, so they are great only to cover short distances in all comfort. You can reserve your ride in advance by calling a company that offers this service on the island or hail on the street, as taxis usually stop around harbors.

Plan your trip
Book Accommodation in Advance – Corfu is a popular summer destination, so the best way to secure your favorite accommodation at a reasonable price is by reserving it well in advance.
Pack Hiking Shoes – You will probably go to Corfu to spend most of your time at the beach. But the island has several great hiking paths you shouldn’t miss. So make sure to pack a good pair of hiking shoes!
Business Opening Hours – Locals are very relaxed, and it is customary that shops and other businesses are closed between 2:30 pm and 4:40 pm. This is considered “nap time”. However, during the peak of the high season, some shops and attractions stay open all day.
Bring a Reusable Bottle – Tap water is safe to drink in Corfu, so bringing with you a reusable water bottle is a great way to reduce plastic usage. It will also save you money.
The Tipping System – When eating out at restaurants, service is always included in the bill. However, tourists are expected to leave a small tip to servers if satisfied with the service.
