LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — If you’re booking a vacation soon, listen up.
Some airlines and travel companies are trying to do everything they can to get more of your money.
Consumer Reporter John Matarese shows you how they do it so you don’t waste your money.
Next time you go to book an airline ticket, hotel or resort, watch what they do! Chances are good they will try to upsell you to spend more.
The last two years of revenge travel have led to sky high travel prices
“It is way too expensive!” Betty Hegley said.
And not just when it come to flying.
Hegley said everything travel related has gotten so pricey.
“I feel that for what you pay for, you are not getting the service you used to,” Hegley said.
And your next trip may be even pricier as airlines and travel companies try o get you to pay more for extra.
Barron’s Weekly said “airlines are getting creative with upselling” because it brings in money.
For example, when you try to book a basic economy ticket, you will be asked if you want to upgrade to main cabin.
The airline reminds you that you can’t choose your seat in advance or board early.
With hotels, websites will push a nicer room. And with cruises, they may try to upsell all sorts of extra excursions, adventures, as well as the VIP section of the ship.
But from the ‘doesn’t that stink file,’ how upselling can cost big money if you are not careful.
Move from basic economy to main cabin? That could be an extra $100. Adding excursions can turn that $500 budget cruise into a $1,000 cruise.
And the worse part is when they shame you to sticking with the cheapest package.
There’s nothing wrong with upselling to a higher level if that’s what you really want. However, be on the lookout, so you don’t waste your money.
