MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – What started as a group of strangers heading to the Detroit Lions first playoff game in 32 years ended with friendship after a series of travel snafus.
Life-long Lions fan Gary Howell planned to fly straight from Escanaba to Detroit this past Friday, but his flight was re-routed to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania after the Detroit Airport closed due to the winter storm.
After having to stay the night in Pittsburgh, Howell learned his morning flight to Detroit was delayed until late afternoon. That’s when he took action.
“I thought, ‘I can’t risk sitting here until 4:50 just to be delayed again. I got a game to get to,’” Howell said. “So, I yelled out, ‘Who wants to rent a minivan?’ So, a bunch of strangers all pitched in, and we got a minivan and we drove 4 and a 1/2 hours from Pittsburgh to Detroit.”
Howell said he kept running into his fellow travelers at the game. They greeted each other with high fives and big smiles.
He’s heading back to Detroit this weekend to watch the Lions play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He hopes his travel plans go smoothly, but he said either way, the memories he’s making are priceless.
