Hyderabad: Commuters heading to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad can now enjoy faster travel as the speed limit on the airport premises has been increased to 80 kmph. The revised speed limit, effective from February 7, applies throughout the length of the Hyderabad airport approach road.
In a statement, RGIA stated that the new speed limit is crucial for ensuring the safety of all individuals utilising the road, including passengers, airport staff, and drivers. The establishment of the speed limit has been coordinated with the traffic police, and non-compliance will result in fines imposed by the authorities. To enhance traveler safety, an automatic speed enforcement system has been installed along the airport approach road, as per the TOI report.
The RGIA traffic police released a report assuring that the increased speed limit on the main access road at RGI Airport will not cause any traffic issues. The revised speed limit will be applicable on the road leading to the airport after the Shamshabad flyover, covering a stretch of approximately six kilometers. Previously, the average travel time on this route ranged from 20 to 25 minutes, which can now be reduced to 10 to 15 minutes. The road conditions are favorable, with proper drainage systems, a road width of 60 feet, a central median, and adequate illumination, according to Inspector K. Raju of RGIA (traffic) police.
In line with the new speed limit, authorities have erected signage indicating the revised speed limits along the access road stretch. Additionally, locations have been selected to install automatic speed enforcement systems at the airport. Mr. Kaparaju, the representative handling the application, has proposed a direct link between the speed limit enforcement system data and police records, enabling speed camera configuration with the traffic system.
