A local travel agent says Omaha was the second-largest growing city per capita, for passengers before the pandemic. That’s why for him, Eppley Airfield’s expansion and renovation is a long time coming.”Thank God, it’s about time,” said Robert Lopez, owner of Freedom Travel in Omaha.The nearly $1 billion program promises to double the size of the terminal at Eppley Airfield. And it has travel agents like Lopez beyond excited.”This is going to be huge for us as the travel industry, for us here in Omaha specifically,” Lopez said. The renovated terminal will include two gates for international flights and a new Customs and Border Protection International Arrivals hall.”It’s a new marketing aspect for us. ‘Hey, would you love to go nonstop from Omaha to Cancun and not have to go through Chicago or Denver, especially in this weather, or have to drive 3 hours to Kansas City and then have to drive the 3 hours back?'” Lopez said.Other features include new restaurants and larger gate boarding areas, something the Greater Omaha Chamber says companies will be paying attention.”Omaha has a lot of headquarter operations that are located in other parts of the country and those folks want to be able to have great connectivity when it comes to their operations,” Chamber Vice President of Economic Development Mark Norman said.Norman believes more direct flights will draw more businesses to set their sights on Omaha.”It’s a great airport but this is going to take us to the upper echelon,” Norman said.Over at Freedom Travel, Lopez agrees.”Now we can go through and say ‘let’s bring more options in.
