(NewsNation) — The U.S. State Department issued a Level 3 travel advisory for Jamaica, urging Americans to exercise “increased caution” due to an increase in violent crimes.
“It’s an advisory, not a warning. Now, the advice that’s been given by the State Department is the same advice I give people to go to Cincinnati or Cleveland or Wyoming, you know, don’t necessarily walk alone at night. Don’t necessarily drive alone at night,” said NewsNation travel editor Peter Greenberg.
Greenberg joined “Morning in America” to discuss what the advisory means, saying the increase in crime is not likely to impact tourists.
“The good news is, in most cases, these crimes are not crimes committed or targeted at travelers or tourists. They’re gang versus gang crimes, much like we seen in Mexico over the last 15 years. And the same applies to Jamaica. But there are certain neighborhoods and parishes in Jamaica that you shouldn’t go to,” Greenberg said.
For Americans traveling to Jamaica, the State Department strongly recommends obtaining traveler’s insurance, traveling without firearms or ammunition and planning for an emergency.
