Oahu travel tips
How to get around
The easiest way to get around Oahu is with a rental car. The island isn’t that big, but having your car will give you the freedom to explore it all. You will find most major car rental companies on the island at the Honolulu Airport and Waikiki. To be eligible to rent a car in Oahu, you must be 21 years old or older and have an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Another option is to get around via bus. Oahu has the best public bus service in Hawaii, and the company that operates all the routes is called The Bus. Getting around by bus is the cheapest option you will find, but also the slowest. So consider it when sifting through the various transport options. You can purchase tickets directly on the coach or by tapping the HOLO card upon getting on the bus. To get a HOLO card, you just need to pop into any ABC Store in Waikiki.
The last best option is to book a ride through a ride-sharing service. Uber, Lyft, and Holoholo are all available in Hawaii, and finding a ride in Oahu is incredibly easy as the island is the most populated of the archipelago.
Neighborhood map
Oahu is divided into five distinct regions: Honolulu, the Windward Coast, Central Oʻahu, the Leeward Coast, and the North Shore. Here, you will find a handy map of the best places to stay in Oahu.
Plan your trip
Pack Reef-Safe Sunscreen – Don’t forget to pack sunscreen when traveling to Oahu. However, be mindful of the sunscreen you buy: some contain harmful chemicals to the coral reef. So, make sure to pack sunscreen that doesn’t have oxybenzone and octinoxate in its composition.
Turtle Regulations – Speaking of marine life, you should know that there are severe regulations around sea turtles. You can watch these incredible creatures, but it is illegal to touch or harass them at any time.
Reserve Your Spot at Mount Diamond – While in Honolulu, you can’t not hike to the crater of Mount Diamond. This hike is among the most popular things to do in Oahu, and if you are traveling during summer, we suggest you reserve your spot in advance.
Make a Reservation in Advance to Visit Pearl Harbor – Another site you should book your spot in advance is Pearl Harbor. While entry to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is free, you need a timed ticket to the USS Arizona Memorial. You can easily reserve your ticket through the Government’s Official Website.
Save On Food by Eating in Food Trucks – Hawaii has a vibrant food truck scene, serving lots of deliciousness, from Asian dishes to Hawaiian pokè. Purchasing your meals at local food tracks is the best way to stay on a budget during your trip.
